The village of Peyia has stunning views
of the glistening waters of the
Mediterranean below and the stunning
mountains in the north. With the laid
back and relaxed attitudes, Peyia
provides a welcome change from the
chaotic lifestyle of nearby Paphos. The
village began as a traditional quiet
Cypriot village with small stone built
houses surrounding a church. However,
due to its close proximity to the famous
Coral Bay, Peyia has become more and
more popular as both a residential and
tourist area. It is approximately 4 km
from the sandy beaches at Coral Bay and
approximately 15 km from the centre of
Paphos.
Rumour
has it that Peyia developed is name from
a small local fishing
harbour
that the Venetians called "Bahia". The
village of Peyia is popular for nature
trails, with a chance to see rare plants
and birds. The Akamas peninsula, an
unspoilt,
environmentally protected national park
is close to Peyia. The
neighbouring
village of Kathikas is also a popular
stop off point with its array of lovely
restaurants and wineries.
Further
along the coast from Peyia is an area
called the Sea Caves, where the sea has
gouged out the limestone cliffs and left
some odd geological formations.
Important early Christian and Roman
archeological sites lie inland at this
point, including a complex of rock-cut
tombs that go unnoticed by most.
